12. Use of antibiotics
"So, Jeff, do you remember anything other way that you might have been exposed to multi-drug resistant Salmonella?"
"I remember that Mr. Owens practically had a complete pharmacy in his truck," Jeff recalled. "And he said he gave Fernando a shot of penicillin before he brought him to the vet clinic, but he said it didn’t help. Mr. Owens said that he always gives his animals a shot or two of something and waits to see if it works before he calls the vet."
"Self-medicating with antibiotics is never a good idea, in humans or animals," Dr. Lange remarked.
Dr. Lange told Jeff she would call the laboratory about the case and the laboratory results, especially the results of the Salmonella culture and antimicrobial resistance testing.
