13. At the micro lab

Jeff was curious and decided to stop by the veterinary microbiology laboratory to talk with Dr. Mitchell (the chief microbiologist) about the laboratory results on Fernando (the horse).  First Jeff reviewed his notes from microbiology class on the basics of culture and susceptibility testing. Then, he would ask Dr. Mitchell to discuss the results and how to use the information in a clinical setting.

Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria that can cause diarrheal illness in humans and other animals. May also cause severe invasive disease.

Two of the most common serotypes that frequently cause illness in both humans and domestic animals are Typhimurium and Newport.
