Diaminopyrimidines (Trimethoprim)

 

Mode of action:

 

Inhibition of other metabolic processes. Trimethoprim interferes with folic acid pathway by binding the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase.

 

Example:

Trimethoprim, Aditoprim, Baquiloprim, Ormetoprim

Broad spectrum; affects Gram-positive and many Gram-negative bacteria

 

Effect on bacteria:

Bacteriostatic

 

Add-ons:

Act synergistically (and becomes bactericidal) in combination with sulfonamides
