Rifamycins

 

Mode of action:

 

Inhibition of nucleic acid synthesis. Enters neutrophils and macrophages and inhibits DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in bacteria

Example:

Rifampin, Rifabutin, Rifapentine

Spectrum of activity:

Broad spectrum; also has antiviral and antifungal activity

 

Effect on bacteria:

Bactericidal

 

Add-ons:

Rifampin is used as a first line oral drug treatment for tuberculosis in humans.
